Transmission Innovations

Our MB Transmissions are light-weight, efficient, and powerful, yet easy to use. Designers are constantly focused on engineering new solutions to make manual and automated gear shift (AGS) transmissions more efficient, easier to use, and more powerful. Here are some of the innovations we've introduced to improve the driving experience.

Keys to an unbeatable driving experience

Transmission Control Unit (TCU)

The TCU is the brain of our automated transmissions—telling the AGS exactly when to shift for optimal performance and fuel economy. The TCU evaluates truck weight, uphill or downhill grades, curves and other road conditions to determine the precise shift points so you can get the most out of your engine. Plus, it protects the transmission from accidental damage from poor shifting—eliminating driveline abuse and extending the life of your transmission.

Two-Pedal System

Mercedes-Benz's innovative two-pedal system for AGS transmissions is easy to use and requires no special training—perfect for both veteran and inexperienced drivers. By eliminating the clutch completely, the two-pedal system opens up more space and makes the driver more comfortable—reducing fatigue and improving safety.

Lightweight Aluminum Housing

Both manual and automated MBT transmissions feature a lightweight aluminum alloy housing with integrated bell housing. This reduction in transmission weight means increased payloads, while maintaining the highest level of durability.

Hydraulic Clutch Actuation

With sophisticated hydraulic clutch actuation, you get smoother shifts, as well as increased clutch and powertrain life—not to mention lower overall operational costs.

PTO Power and Configuration

SAE 6-bolt PTO ports are standard on all MBT transmissions, offering a wide range of torque and horsepower levels. Configured conveniently on the right side, the 5 o'clock location avoids interference with exhaust systems.

Sealed Bearings and Heat-Treated Gears and Shafts

The special sealed bearings and heat-treated gears and shafts on MBT transmissions increase durability to withstand the rigorous trucking environment, and keep debris from damaging the transmission.

Gear Faces

Larger gears with helical gear faces guarantee easy shifting and quiet operation.

Clutch System

MB manual transmissions use a 395 mm x-tend push type clutch with cushion springs. This self-adjusted clutch system with noise reduction at drive-off leads to increased safety control and comforts.
